Recycling Mistakes and How to Fix Them

Recycling is a huge issue around the world. Some people decide to boost recycling efforts by reducing waste and limiting what they do throw away to items that can easily degrade or be directly recycled. The issue is that they may be recycling the items incorrectly. Here are some recycling mistakes you might be making and how you can fix them.

Recycling Plastic Bags

A common mistake occurs with plastic bags. Many people either throw them away for toss them in the plastic recycle bin. The truth is, plastic bags need to be recycled through different methods. In order to recycle them, you will need to remove them from your garbage bin and take them to a plastic bag recycler station. You can find one of these stations at most grocery stores. You can also donate them for upcycling to a local charity that can turn the bags into mats for the homeless. There are also projects that use recycled plastic bags in DIY projects.

Recycling Coffee Cups

There is a misconception that coffee cups can be recycled because they are made of a type of cardboard. The truth is, some coffee cups cannot be recycled easily. Some have a small film of plastic, which makes them ineligible for recycling in most cases. Instead, you can reuse them for different tasks such as seed starting for gardens. You can either use a reusable coffee cup, which you can also get from your favorite coffee shop, or ensure the cup you use is biodegradable and toss it in with the general waste on garbage removal day.

Recycling Clean Items

Before you toss an item into the recycling bin, you need to make sure the items are clear of any food or debris. This does not mean the item needs to be totally clean. It simply means that if you are tossing out a pizza box, for example, that the pizza and debris is removed from the box. If you have a glass jar you are recycling, make sure to remove the paper labeling and rinse out the food remaining in the jar.

These are just a few of the common recycling mistakes that can be made. If you are unsure of how to properly recycle certain items, or if they are even available for recycling, contact your local garbage removal company. They can help with options and help you with the proper disposal bins if available.
